My Favourite Concrete

Are you a concrete lover or a concrete loather? Or perhaps somewhere in between.

The trend for exposed concrete in home interiors is not going away anytime soon. If it’s a trend you wholeheartedly embrace, here’s a few examples of how you can incorporate concrete into your home plus a few tips and tricks to warm it up for family life.

In our first image we have a concrete wall and floor contrasted with a timber wall and ceiling. Choose a warm toned timber (like in this image) to create a balanced colour palette. Choose a cool toned timber if you want a cool, crisp colour palette.

The harshness of concrete also looks great with strong, textured textiles as a contrast. Nobbly textures on the two armchairs and a boldly patterned rug create a softening balance. Notice also how the introduction of foliage looks particularly good here – the natural world meets the manufactured world.

Soft funishings, books and artworks add an important layer of domesticity. Even in a room with concrete on the wall, ceiling and floor. This must be the home of a true concrete lover!

But you don’t need to build a new home just so you can incorporate concrete. In this final image, a concrete-look paint finish has been applied to bring some industrial toughness into a bedroom. If you want to introduce a little urban design flair, this would be a great place to start.
