The beauty of a window seat lies in its promise. The promise of the possibility of time spent staring out a window or engrossed in a fabulous book. The promise of cushions and comfort and time to do very little. In our busy world, time may be the most enticing promise of all.
A window seat is simply a seat built into a window recess. It’s a great way to get value out of a space that is often forgotten.
In this first image it’s all about the view outside. Perhaps in particular when it’s wild and wintery outside and warm and cosy inside. Once you’ve carved out the space for a window seat, it’s all about textiles and textures. Window seats are a great place to splurge on some extra-special fabric, knowing that you’re not going to need to purchase many metres.
A small table will always be useful nearby for your hot chocolate, herbal tea or gin and tonic (and perhaps a little snack).
Window seats can be a great way of using nooks to the side of a fireplace. You’ll create extra seating for when you’re entertaining large groups without taking up any of the valuable floor space. I particularly like how, in this third image, display shelves are also a part of the window seat design.
Window seats also offer the opportunity to sneak in some more storage. And they’re a great way to make the most out of a bay window. I love how, in this last image, wall lights have been added to make it a practical reading spot.
Window seats are a great way to eke every last bit out of your space for both seating and storage. Plus they are another excuse (do we really need any?) to bring more luscious textiles into our homes.
